It was very informal it was more can we have fun with these people? Are we going to fit in with the Barry’s family? From a business standpoint it’s not a corporate mindset. We got on really well with the founders of Barry’s, and we basically convinced them that we were the right people to do it in London. When we came along we were like this is the most amazing work out. It was early days in terms of the expansion. I think they had also just franchised to Norway. How did you make the case to open at Barry's in London? That is the secret behind a Barry’s instructor, to be able to judge that.Ī selection of protein shakes from Barry's Bootcamp Courtesy of Barry's Bootcamo We always talk about as trainers leaving our egos behind, you might not be doing exactly what I want you to be doing but that’s not because you think my class is crap, it’s just not where you’re at right now. Someone can come in having had a really bad day and all they want to do is just forget about it for an hour the last thing they want is me behind them screaming and shouting.

I think the biggest challenge is when you’re teaching in a room full of people, you don’t know what people are bringing into that room. I have a plan in my head about the month and what I want to do for people, but people either come or they don’t, and I can’t control that. You’ll have these moments where you think I could have pushed harder, but you don’t need me to come and tell you that. If you keep coming and you keep making an effort, you’ll get there over time. I’d rather you come and enjoy yourself and you’re far more likely to come back. Me personally, I’m not going to be getting really stressed out if people aren’t working as hard as they should be. You have lots of different trainers with different styles, all teaching a Barry’s class, but with slightly different philosophies on how they want to get the best out of you. How do you keep the classes exciting for everyone? Sandy Macaskill CEO of Barry's Bootcamp UK Courtesy of Barry's Bootcamp When you come out you’ve shared an experience with the people around you. And then you come to it and everyone does it’s that group environment where everyone comes out feeling like they’ve achieved something together. When you’re up on the treadmill and you have that voice in your head, telling yourself that you can do it, or you can’t do it. It’s a love/hate thing, people love it but hate it at the same time. Within that there’s an element of the unknown, you walk into the room and the trainer could be doing a dirty thirty- it’s like folklore in Barry’s- which is 30 minutes on the treadmill, 30 minutes on the floor. In terms of how we break it down it’s always half an hour on treadmill and 25-30 minutes on the floor. It helps on two things, one is it keeps you interested and from a working-out standpoint it’s going to keep your body guessing. Part of what makes it special is the fact that the trainers can change things up, so every day you come in and you do a class and you don’t know what you’re going to get. I’ve seen other things crop up where they’re much more formulaic whereas Barry’s has been around since 1998, and it’s just kind of evolved I guess. I think it’s quite different and and it’s led the move into this kind of thing. Tell me about the workout itself? What makes in unique? So, my brother and I started the process to bring it over. It’s a nice environment, you’re not outside running in a park, which is what it used to be like in London. If I’m motivated and it takes me three hours to get a good work out in, what about the people who don’t have that time and aren’t motivated to do it? Just go and do it in one hour, get told what to do, you don’t have to think, come out, get a shake.

I was a tennis coach, and I used to spend three hours in the gym walking around, drinking water, wasting time and watching TV like everyone else. In one hour I came in and did everything that would usually take me about three hours. She called me up and said I’ve had this amazing work out I think it would be amazing in London, are you interested? So, I went to New York in 2011 the day they opened, and I did a Barry’s class myself and it was insane. My brother’s wife was a client in L.A., and she introduced it to my brother, who is my business partner in this. When we opened here in London in 2013, there was nothing like it. How did this all begin? How did you get involved in Barry's and ultimately bring it over to the UK?
